There was a time when most of my fitness goals revolved around doing more.

More miles. More workouts. More calories burned.

Like many women, I believed the answer was always more movement. And for a while, it worked.

Until it didn’t.

Years of running eventually started catching up with me. My knees hurt more. Recovery took longer. The aches and pains that used to disappear after a day or two started sticking around. I found myself doing what so many women do in midlife… pushing through and hoping things would improve.

What surprised me was that the answer wasn’t doing more.

It was building more.

More muscle. More strength. More resilience.

Today, I spend far less time worrying about calories burned and far more time focused on getting stronger. And the interesting thing is that many of the things I used to chase now happen almost as a byproduct. My joints feel better. My posture is stronger. I stand taller. My weight is easier to manage. I sleep better. And perhaps most importantly, I move through life with more confidence because I trust what my body can do.

That is what the Rise phase of the Nourish Move Flourish Method is really about.

Not becoming a bodybuilder. Not chasing perfection.

It’s about building a body that supports the life you want to live.

Why Muscle Matters More Than Ever in Midlife

One of the biggest misconceptions I see among women over 40 is that strength training is primarily about appearance.

Yes, building muscle can change how your body looks. But what excites me far more are all the things happening beneath the surface.

Muscle helps support metabolism, blood sugar regulation, bone health, balance, stability, mobility, and energy. It helps us recover better, move more confidently, and maintain our independence as we age.

What many women don’t realize is that after 30, we naturally begin losing muscle mass if we aren’t actively working to maintain it. The process is gradual, which is why it’s easy to miss.

At first it looks like feeling a little weaker. A little more tired. A little less steady.

Over time, it can look like slower metabolism, more aches and pains, difficulty keeping weight off, reduced mobility, and feeling older than you actually are.

This isn’t meant to be alarming. It’s meant to be empowering.

Because while some changes come with age, many of the ones women struggle with most can be improved when we start prioritizing strength.

The Moment Everything Starts To Shift

One of my favorite parts of coaching is watching women realize they’re stronger than they thought.

In the beginning, many are hesitant. They’ve spent years avoiding weights. Some worry they’ll get hurt. Others aren’t convinced strength training is for them.

Then little things start happening.

A heavier dumbbell suddenly feels manageable. Carrying groceries becomes easier. Their balance improves. Their knees or shoulders don’t ache as much. Their posture changes.

And then one day they see something different in the mirror.

I was working with a client recently and complimented her on the muscle definition showing up in her arms. She smiled and quietly admitted she’d been admiring them in the mirror herself.

I absolutely loved that moment.

Not because of how her arms looked.

But because of what it represented.

Pride. Confidence. Evidence that she was becoming stronger.

As women, we’ve spent decades being taught to focus on shrinking ourselves. Smaller bodies. Smaller sizes. Less weight.

I think there’s something incredibly powerful about shifting the goal from getting smaller to getting stronger.

Because strength changes more than your body.

It changes how you see yourself.

Strength Creates Freedom

One of the most surprising things women discover is that strength training often improves many of the issues they originally came to me for.

They sleep better. Their energy becomes more stable. They recover faster. Their stress feels more manageable. Their confidence grows.

Because strength isn’t just something you build in the gym.

It changes how you show up everywhere else too.

The Rise phase isn’t really about fitness. It’s about capacity.

The capacity to hike, travel, play with grandchildren, paddle a kayak, carry luggage, move furniture, or simply get through your day without feeling exhausted.

It’s about having the confidence to say yes to opportunities because you trust your body to support you.

Strength creates options. And options create freedom.

Ready to Rise?

If you’re tired of feeling like your body is working against you… if you’re ready to build strength, improve your energy, and feel more confident in what your body can do… I’d love to help.

The women I work with aren’t trying to become elite athletes. They’re trying to feel strong enough to fully participate in their lives again.

If that sounds like you, I invite you to schedule a complimentary Sleep & Energy Breakthrough Session.

We’ll talk about where you are now, what’s holding you back, and what building strength with intention could look like for this next season of your life.

No pressure. Just a conversation about helping you feel stronger, healthier, and more like yourself again.

About NickiFit

Since 2014, when NickiFit A to Z began, it has been my mission to make fitness accessible to all women. Many women feel uncomfortable in a standard gym setting. Many women have had horrible experiences with past trainers who did not provide the level of care they needed. I meet clients where they are at. I recognize that not everyone is comfortable in a gym or working out in groups so I coach clients in the comfort of their own home. I guide women through efficient, effective at home workouts and help them adjust their nutrition and their habits to support the life they want to live.
